How Security Automation is Reducing the Cost of Cybersecurity Breaches

The cost of data breaches continues to grow year after year, and 2024 was no different. The average cost of a data breach for 2024 was $4.88 million, a 10% increase over last year, according to IBM’s 2024 Cost of a Data Breach Report.

The report’s research—conducted independently by Ponemon Institute and sponsored, analyzed and published by IBM— studied 604 organizations impacted by data breaches between March 2023 and February 2024. This report looked at organizations across 17 industries, in 16 countries and regions, and breaches that ranged from 2,100 to 113,000 compromised records. The Ponemon Institute researchers interviewed 3,556 security and C-suite business leaders with firsthand knowledge of the data breach incidents  at their organizations.

Cost Savings from Gen-AI and Security Automation

One of the key findings from this report is that organizations that applied AI and automation to security prevention saw the biggest impact in reducing the cost of a breach, saving an average of USD 2.22 million over those organizations that didn’t deploy these technologies.

With all of the advancements in AI technology, the adoption of generative AI (gen AI) models and third-party applications across the organization, as well as the ongoing use of Internet of Things (IoT) devices and SaaS applications, are expanding the attack surface, and making it more and more difficult for security teams to monitor their environments.

However, findings show that organizations that used AI-powered and automation security tools extensively incurred on average $1.88 million less in cost from a breach, at $3.84 million. In comparison, companies that did not use AI and automation saw average losses of $5.72 million. Those with limited use of AI and automation also saw lower costs from a breach of $4.64 million.

How does Security Automation Reduce the Cost of a Breach?

Security automation can significantly reduce the cost of a security breach by streamlining and enhancing the efficiency of incident detection, response, and mitigation. Here are some key ways it can achieve this:

Faster Detection and Response

Firstly, AI Powered Security and Security Automation can increase the detection and response time for a company to react to a breach. Automation can drastically reduce the dwell time of a threat remaining undetected within a network. Additionally, Automated systems can identify and respond to threats in real-time, minimizing the damage. These systems also can have automated responses to cybersecurity threats, such as isolating infected systems or blocking malicious traffic. These responses can be executed immediately, preventing the spread of an attack.

Lower Operational Costs

Another way that security automation can help reduce the cost of a security breach is by reducing the amount of resources required for responding to a security incident. Automation reduces the need for a large security team to manually monitor and respond to incidents. This allows organizations to optimize their human resources to focus on more strategic tasks. Moreover, automated tools can handle higher volumes of alerts and incidents simultaneously, without the incremental cost that additional IT team members would require.

Minimizing Human Error

With human error accounting for 22% of all security breaches, the consistency and accuracy provided by automated systems is invaluable to IT teams. Automated security systems follow pre-defined rules and are less likely to make mistakes that occur due to human error, such as overlooking a critical alert or the misconfiguration of a security setting. These standardized processes ensure that incident response is consistent across the organization, reducing variability and the risk of incorrect or delayed actions.

Enhanced Threat Intelligence Integration

Security automation and AI-powered security can also provide real-time updates and proactive defense for enhanced threat intelligence. Automated systems are able to integrate with threat intelligence feeds in real-time, ensuring that they are always up-to-date with the latest threat data. As well, by automating the application of threat intelligence, organizations can proactively defend against known threats, reducing the likelihood of successful breaches.

Compliance and Reporting

The cost of regulatory fines are rising, and not meeting compliance standards in the event of a breach could add significant costs on top of the already substantial cost of a data breach. Security automation can continuously monitor systems for compliance with security policies and regulatory requirements. These automated compliance checks reduce the risk of fines and legal costs associated with non-compliance. Automated reporting tools can also quickly generate the reports needed for internal audits or external investigations, saving time and reducing the costs associated with manual reporting.

Reduced Recovery Costs

By limiting the scope of a breach, security automation can also reduce the recovery costs. Automated security can isolate and mitigate an attack, and limit the extent of the damage, reducing costs associated with data loss, system downtime, and business disruption. Automation tools can also improve remediation by quickly restoring systems to a secure state.

Better Risk Management

Lastly, predictive analytics and machine learning help security automation systems to identify potential vulnerabilities and threats before they are exploited. This allows organizations to address risks proactively. By identifying and mitigating risks earlier, automation helps in preventing breaches, thereby avoiding the significant costs of data breaches, including legal fees, regulatory fines, and reputational damage.

Wrapping Up

In an era where data breaches are increasingly costly, security automation offers a powerful solution to mitigate these expenses. By enabling faster detection and response, reducing operational costs, minimizing human error, and enhancing compliance and threat intelligence, organizations can significantly lower the financial impact of a breach. As the digital landscape continues to evolve, embracing AI-powered security automation is not just a strategic advantage—it’s essential for safeguarding against the rising tide of cyber threats.
